SCBRC Joins Effort to Distribute Water

People in the village of Armenta, Honduras receive water only one day a week. The water they get is stored at home, and that weekly allotment is all they get for drinking, food preparation, laundry, bathing and sanitation. People often go without adequate water, as do their animals. Additionally, the medical center that treats both people and animals often goes without water for days, greatly hampering their ability to adequately serve the community.

Armenta villagers have asked Engineers without Borders-USA, Chicagoland Professional Chapter (EWB-USA, CPC) to help them replace their undersized and damaged water distribution system with one that can serve the entire community daily. They previously worked with EWB-USA, CPC building a pedestrian bridge and are confident EWB can help them. The cost to replace Armenta’s water distribution system is estimated at $223,000 and EWB fund raising is in full swing.

The St. Charles Breakfast Rotary Club Foundation is sponsoring the project and has committed $2000 in this fiscal year. SCBRC member A. J. Voth, who is also a member of EWB-USA, CPC, has been taking the word out to other Rotary clubs along with club President John Knewitz and President Elect Rob Gephart. Director Ann Richards helped EWB-USA, CPC with the Rotary Matching Grant process and has taken the Armenta fundraising to her father’s home Rotary club in Ohio.
